U.S. Central Command had been conducting targeted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria as part of a strategy to degrade and defeat the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, better known as ISIL. Buzzing over a northern Iraqi city in her Kiowa scout helicopter in support of ground troops, Army Captain Robin Maguire’s craft took hits and was shot down.
