Story shocked African-American female reader

This is the first book I read by this author and it was, literally, a life-changing experience for me. As an African-American woman, I started reading it in a righteous rage, intending to vent my my angry indignation about it. I was surprised by how well written it was, and was shocked by its cultural and emotional depth as I was by its cruel content. This is a really hardcore sadomasochistic story. I would warn readers. Reading Jadonna the Slave began a journey of self-discovery for me.
